Why is this Important?

 

A governing body gets its authority from the people who elect them. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. - That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Women/Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed." (emphasis added.  U.S., 1776)

Who are the "governed?  We are, "We the People."  We have a say in how we are governed because WE are the voters, the taxpayers and essentially the "employers"and customers of our elected officials and their support staff.

If WE the PEOPLE are not watching, how do we know that our elected officials are acting in the interest of the PEOPLE?

What is the governing body -- our school board -- supposed to do?

Their responsibilities require them to exercise the following:  

  • The duty of care

  • The duty of loyalty

  • The duty of impartiality

  • The duty of accountability

  • The duty to preserve the public’s trust in government
